Placing Perak on the Map

The Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCCI) has set a target to make Perak a globally known brand.

PCCCI President Datuk Liew Sew Yee said, with the country set to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) next year and the formation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC), the state needs to be recognized internationally in order to attract investors and businesses.

“I think many foreign countries have never heard about Ipoh or Perak, unlike Kuala Lumpur or Penang which are well known,” he said during the inaugural PCCCI Media Night at a hotel here.

“We have set ourselves an important target, which is to make Perak known to foreign countries,” Liew added.

Liew said even as the AEC and TPPA open up cross-border markets and take away non-tariff barriers, they will also create a lot of challenges.

“It is good that the trade agreement creates a powerful market force. There are about 800 million consumers to tap under TPPA.”

“However, when foreign investors come into our country, they also want to be part of that market, creating competition. As people come into the country to work, the same goes to our own people going abroad. We could lose out in terms of getting professionals to work with us,” he said, adding that it will become even more important to work with the media to promote the Perak state.

Liew also said that the association, having been in existence for 107 years, need to change its focus and aim for a higher goal.

“We have always been the voice for trade, industry and commerce in Perak”

“We want to be a body that serves the business community regardless of race,” Liew said.

Perak has been home to many multinational companies over the years, with the state’s favourable business environment allowing them ease of operation and room to grow. (Invest Perak)
